“Wow. That restaurant was so much better than Étoile,” I admitted to Maksim, holding my full belly.
“See, I told you,” he laughed, looking at me holding my stomach like a pregnant woman.
We stood on the city sidewalk under the canopy of New York City’s highest-rated hotel, having just eaten at the hotel’s restaurant. Moments like these had become increasingly frequent in the weeks since Maksim and I attended the Home Again gala. I was beginning to catch glimpses of a lighthearted side of him I would have never thought existed. He held my hand while we waited for the valet to arrive with his Maserati.
Moments later, the Maserati pulled to the curb and the valet jumped out, jogging around the car. Maksim opened my door and tipped the valet as I sat in the car and clicked my seatbelt. The Maserati veered into the street as Maksim began the short drive back to his building. During lunch, I asked out of curiosity, and Maksim readily answered, questions about his work in property development, promoting TwoOneTwo, and his role in Odessa Holdings, Inc. We continued the conversation in the car as Maksim explained why Odessa Holdings, Inc.’s headquarters were located in Sheepshead Bay.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been to Sheepshead Bay. Since I’m not working right now, could I go see your office? I can bring you lunch or something.”
“Uh, no,” Maksim answered, his hand on the gearshift and his eyes on the traffic ahead. “If I’m not at a property or TwoOneTwo, I’m usually working from my office at home. I rarely go out to Sheepshead Bay and I avoid going there at all, if possible.”
“Yah, but, when you are there, I’d like to see where you work,” I commented casually, watching people on the sidewalk as we drove past.
When Maksim didn’t respond, I turned my face to him as we slowed to a stop at a red light. Maksim was already looking at me. He gently grasped my jaw in his large hand.
“No, Lilyflower. I don’t want you going to Sheepshead Bay. It’s not for you.”
I frowned, confused. “But, why? What--”
I jumped in my seat, the sharp sound of a ricochet off the windshield catching my attention. My eyes roved quizzically over a circular notch in the glass where something, I thought maybe a small rock kicked up by a vehicle ahead, had hit the middle of the windshield. I leaned forward to inspect the notch further, frowning as I narrowed my eyes. A tiny hole appeared, with spidery cracks forming on its border.
“What the--”
Maksim’s hand punched my seatbelt buckle and threw the seatbelt off me.
“Get on the floor!” he thundered.
Frightened by the volume of his voice, I stared at him feebly.
“Get down!” He boomed again as his massive hand pushed on my shoulder.
I shrank down and wilted to the floor of the Maserati, wedged between the passenger seat and the glove box. Maksim slammed the gearshift, his knuckles and jaw white from tension. My head bounced off the glove box as his foot stomped on the accelerator.
